Featured Artist - SpiritMama Art and Soul
One of our newest members is Waxela, (pronounced wa-shay-la). Her name is of Mayan origin. SpiritMama Art and Soul is her Etsy name. She has always been an artist and had discovered polymer clay as a youngster constructing a giant miniature mansion and sculpting everything in it. She went to car races with her father when young and would entertain herself by sculpting with very sticky mud. Her mom put her in sculpting classes starting in the 4th grade. She has a BFA from the college of design at Iowa State University.
Her whimsical toys, animals and characters show her love for the medium. One of her “can’t do without sculpting tools” is - toothpicks. From the very beginning, she has sculpted with round toothpicks and has never given them up.
She offers the following advice for newbies - “Do what you love. If you love to make jewelry, do jewelry. If it is art dolls that inspire you, make them! Try new things and try your favorites in different mediums, and you will excel at your craft.”
